For my first post, I figured an introduction was in order. I'm Hesson, and I'm a hunter from Gurubashi. More specifically, I'm a BM hunter. I've been a BM hunter since I started playing, and I don't ever plan on changing. I was already in love with the spec, and with the release of Wrath of the Lich King and the introduction of some of the coolest pets ever created, my feelings were only reinforced. Even when BigRedKitty seemed to have abandoned the spec for everything but exotic tames, I pressed on, convinced that beast mastery is capable of more than everyone thinks. Thanks to my stubborn attitude regarding talent specialization, I've essentially forced myself to learn how to get the most out of the beast mastery talent tree. However, I've noticed something in the WoW community regarding beast mastery: everyone thinks it's bad.
As someone who's familiar with its ins and outs, I disagree, but up until now I haven't had a place to tell everyone how much I disagree, and why. I'm certainly not the best hunter in the game in the gear department, but I'm convinced that beast mastery is capable of doing just as much damage as survival and marksmanship, if not more. My primary goal with this site is to share my thoughts, advice and strategies for playing a hunter and one of the most underrated specs in the game, as well as any hunter related developments with new patches and game changes.
In the real world, however, I'm a web designer and developer. I've coded this entire website from scratch, including the custom framework it runs on, as well as several WoW and gaming related code libraries. So with that in mind, I intend to share those libraries with you, in the hopes that it will make other web designers' lives easier. I'll admit, that's probably a pretty small target audience, but since this is essentially a personal gaming related blog I figured it wouldn't hurt to include. Because this entire thing was written from scratch, there are obviously bound to be bugs in both display and functionality. If you happen to encounter any bugs, I greatly appreciate your feedback and have setup a bug reporting page for just that.
I look forward to bringing you new, regular content. With all that in mind, if you're a survival or marksman hunter who's pretty confident with your class specialization, I'm looking for someone to contribute content for those specs. You can either reply to this post, or send me an email. Thanks for reading my introduction, and be sure to check out my first hunter build post: Beast Mastery: Understanding an underrated specialization.
Have you ever done testing with MM or SV to compare to BM? I ask because as soon as I hit 80 I respecced MM and haven't gone back. Whenever I play with the spreadsheet, the best I can do in BM is about 1k dps less than MM. I would go back to BM if I thought it was truly raid viable, but I don't want to spend the gold on regemming and enchanting if I'm not certain it's worth it. I know what my raid leader will say if I tell him I'm switching to BM and I need a good argument to ease his mind.
I tried MM for a little while in BC, but beyond that I've been exclusively BM. My confidence comes from the fact that I've played with numerous marksman and survival hunters with differing levels of gear (usually better geared than myself), in a variety of different places (heroics, 10mans, 25mans) but I've always managed to out DPS them with BM. So in that sense, you could say I've tested my spec by simply comparing it directly with experienced MM and SV hunters, starting out automatically at a disadvantage with lower level gear. I would argue that taking that approach is likely to give you a far better idea of your actual comparative performance, at least for myself, as I would Spreadsheets are cool and all, but until a Blizzard created spreadsheet comes out their accuracy is always questionable because they simply can't replicate the same variables found in-game.
If you're really unsure, I'd recommend at the very least just spending the gold on a respec, try out the DPS, and see if it's even comparable to what you're pulling now. Gems and enchants are nice, but if you're already setup for MM you won't need to switch them over to BM in order to have a good idea how your DPS will change.
As for your raid leader, I'd recommend you simply don't show up with an exotic pet, and don't say anything about it. It's been my experience that simply calling attention to the fact that you're specced BM typically will be the only time others in your raid will say anything, which of course is based on their preconceived notion that BM is bad. Considering most hunters are specced BM until they hit 80, it's easy to see how personal experience playing with fresh newbie hunters specced BM can negatively affect someone's opinion on the spec. Obviously they'll probably catch on when they see your pet grow giant and red, but by then it'll be too late and they won't have any room to complain when you're still pulling solid DPS. In a nutshell, you don't have to go head first into the spec if you're unsure about it. Just try the respec to see if it suits you.
i tried the bm spec posted on this site (was sv) and my dps has gone up a lot it seems like. still going to keep testing it but very happy with the spec so far, cant say for mm tho
I find it entertaining that you say you have "tested" this against other hunters, but never tested MM or Surv. yourself.
Here is my problem with this as a way of testing: Not everyone has the same computer setup or skills as you do. My point was proven with my own hunter. I had a craptastic computer as my main computer, when ever i was on a better computer, I pulled easily 1k more DPS in ANY spec on my hunter.
So comparing your DPS to a different person's on a different machine is unfair and an un-realistic way of "testing" how a spec compares DPS wise. I would be much more impressed with this entire blog if you had tested both Surv. and MM and could show spreadsheets and documents stating that BM is viable.
I could roll MM and survival, but given the fact that I've spent the vast majority of my time playing BM and testing out different specs to find what's worked best, it would hardly be fair for me to then "test" it against Surv/MM as you say because I would obviously still be biased toward my own spec (BM). I respectfully disagree with your view on it being "unfair" to test your DPS in a live, "real world" in-game setting. Spreadsheets can be useful tools at times but if they can't carry over directly to real gameplay results due to someone's computer (for a game that's been out for several years now) then what good are they? I appreciate the feedback though and hope to incorporate spreadsheets in further articles to solidify the points I've made.
As for the other two specs, I invite anyone who feels confident with their hunter build to write me and talk about contributing, as I hope to have numerous authors on this site at a certain point. I'm hoping to incorporate the concept of competition rather than comparison -- Have everyone build their very best for their spec and pit them up against each other, rather than having one person attempt to address all specs and potentially allow one to rise to the top due to biases or lack of experience with the others.
