Long Overdue Post: WTF Blizzard?!

I know this post is long overdue, as this site has become stagnant over the past few months due to the fact that I've been busy during the day almost every day, and extremely lazy at night. It's so much easier to just play WoW rather than write about it, and I've put myself into a bit of a niche with a class that hasn't seen many changes in the past few patches. Regardless, Blizzard has motivated me heavily to get back into updating this site for a few reasons. I'd like to tell you that the big reason I'm getting back into working on this site is because I'm in the Cataclysm beta (which I am), but that would be a lie. The real motivation for me to even write this post is because of the latest RealID move which was no doubt made thanks to the increasing influence that evil mother fucker Robert "Zuckerberg" Kotick has been having on Blizzard.

Before I continue, I will say that I do plan on updating this site with as much BM and hunter related info I can thanks to my current involvement in the Cataclysm beta. I love World of Warcraft, I love playing it, I love the hunter class, and I especially love playing a Beast Mastery hunter. It's a lot of fucking fun. Blizzard makes great games, they always have and I suspect they will continue to do so.

With the ass kissing out of the way, let me continue by saying that Robert Kotick is the worst fucking person to be calling the shots for an otherwise amazing company like Blizzard. He's a shithead, plain and simple, earning himself the reputation, in my opinion, as the "Mark Zuckerberg of the video gaming industry." The latest move by Blizzard to require your REAL first and last name when making forum posts on their new system thanks to the hilariously named REALID system is just one more step toward making World of Warcraft the first MMOSN (massively multiplayer online social network). I won't spend much time on what actually happened, as you can read about the issue from a number of reliable sources or even read the US WoW forum thread here.

What I will say is this: If we, as customers of Blizzard entertainment, allow a move like this to take place, we are essentially giving the green light to greedy, evil mother fuckers like Robert "exploit the shit out of gamers" Kotick and Mark "fuck your privacy" Zuckerberg to continue to rape us for our personal information regardless of how it affects our privacy or safety online. First off, the concept of making your battle.net ID your "RealID" is completely ass backwards from a security standpoint. Why the fuck would you ever consider giving away one of the two required fields to login to your account, essentially setting yourself up for a bruteforcing and subsequent looting/deletion of your characters? Secondly, many individuals have already pointed out the many glaring flaws in the logic of forcing paying customers to share their information online for ANYONE ON THE INTERNET to see, but unfortunately I have the feeling that Blizzard simply won't care due to previous business agreements with companies like Facebook until it starts to affect their wallet.

The solution to this entire RealID clusterfuck is simply taking the same approach Steam has: give every user the ability to create a unique RealID nickname, which could then be reasonably displayed as an association with every character you play and every forum post you make, all the while protecting YOU, the human being behind the screen. Will Blizzard take this approach after the backlash? Perhaps, but some monetary persuasion could certainly push things along a bit.

This is where you come in. I've already made the move to cancel 7 WoW accounts I currently pay for. That would be 3 for my hunter accounts, 1 for my fiance, 1 for my cousin, and 2 recruit-a-friend vanilla accounts I've been using for powerleveling alts. I suggest if you have any sense of what's right, you vote with your wallet and cancel your account, noting under Other -> Personal Reasons that the latest RealID move is a huge breach of trust with a large number of loyal fans.

I look forward to writing more thanks to my involvement with the Cataclysm beta, and because of this and my love for the game I sincerely hope Blizzard wakes the fuck up and stops acting like they're entitled to fuck their customers by turning Battle.net into the worst privacy shit storm ever to hit the gaming industry.

UPDATE: Thankfully, Blizzard has reversed their decision regarding real names on the forums, so I plan to continue playing and look forward to providing some valuable hunter Cataclysm info thanks to being a part of the Beta.
